πŸ”₯ Yamaha MT-09 Review: The Hooligan Triple That Grew Up Without Calming Down

The latest Yamaha MT-09 keeps its wild CP3 triple but adds sharper electronics, better ergonomics, and a more mature chassis. Here is how it rides, what to mod, and who it suits.

The Yamaha MT-09 has always been the naked bike that grins at you. Since it landed, the CP3 triple has made it the wheelie-happy big brother of the MT-07, and every generation has walked a line between hooligan and everyday road bike.

The current MT-09 is the most complete version yet. It still has the same addictive triple, but it now pairs it with a more planted riding position, a full suite of IMU-based electronics, and a chassis that finally feels like it can keep up with the engine.

βš™οΈ Key Specs

  • Engine: 889cc liquid-cooled CP3 inline triple
  • Power: ~119 PS (87.5 kW) @ 10,000 rpm
  • Torque: ~93 Nm @ 7,000 rpm
  • Weight: ~193 kg (kerb)
  • Seat height: ~825 mm
  • Fuel tank: 14 L
  • Suspension: Fully adjustable 41mm KYB fork, adjustable KYB shock
  • Electronics: 6-axis IMU, cornering ABS, traction and slide control, wheelie control, up/down quickshifter, cruise control, 5" TFT

The latest update kept the core engine, frame, and swingarm, but reworked almost everything around them: the ergonomics, suspension rates, bodywork, dash, and electronics.

🧠 Ride Feel

The CP3 is still the star. Low down it is tractable and friendly, and from around 6,000 rpm it pulls like a much bigger bike. The crossplane-style firing order gives it a growl that sits somewhere between a twin and a four, and the intake noise under full throttle is loud enough to make you laugh inside your helmet.

The biggest change you feel is the riding position. The bars are lower and the pegs sit further back, so you are tucked into the bike rather than perched on top of it. It feels more sporty than the older, dirt-bike-style MT-09, but it is still comfortable enough for a full day.

The quickshifter and ride-by-wire throttle are excellent, and cruise control makes highway stints much easier.

⚠️ Things to Know Before You Buy

No bike is perfect, and Australian road testers have pointed out a few quirks:

  • Tall second gear: The engine does not really wake up in second until you are moving at a decent pace. A smaller front sprocket is a simple, popular fix.
  • Base suspension limits: The standard shock is fine for the road but can feel out of its depth when you push hard on bumpy roads.
  • Busy switchgear: Setting up modes and Bluetooth takes some patience.
  • Front-end lightness: It is a light, short naked bike with a strong motor. Expect some head shake over bumps under power.

πŸ†š MT-09 vs MT-09 SP

Feature MT-09 MT-09 SP
Fork Fully adjustable 41mm KYB KYB with DLC coating and high/low-speed compression
Shock Adjustable KYB Fully adjustable Γ–hlins
Front Brakes Yamaha four-piston, Brembo master cylinder Brembo Stylema, Brembo radial master
Extras Standard modes and cruise Track mode, Smart Key, rear ABS disconnect
Ride-Away Price (AUD, launch) ~$17,749 ~$21,199

Verdict: The base bike is the better value for road riders. The SP earns its premium if you do fast weekend runs on rough roads or track days.

Yamaha also offers an MT-09 Y-AMT with an automated manual gearbox. It is worth a test ride if you commute in heavy traffic.

🎯 Who Should Buy the MT-09?

βœ… You are stepping up from an MT-07, Z650, or similar middleweight
βœ… You want a triple with real character
βœ… You like riding electronics but do not want a superbike
βœ… You want a naked bike that can commute, tour, and wheelie
❌ You are a nervous newer rider. The motor is friendly, but it is still a lot of bike.

Final Thoughts

The MT-09 has grown up, but it has not lost its sense of humour. It is quicker, more comfortable, and smarter than ever, and it is still one of the most fun bikes you can buy for the money.

If you want one bike that can do the commute on Monday and the twisties on Sunday, and you want it to make you laugh doing both, the MT-09 belongs on your shortlist.
